Source Water Protection
The Bryan Water Department has an excellent record of providing safe drinking water to the
public, and we are continuing our efforts to ensure an abundant supply of clean water for
the future. The Board of Public Affairs authorized a monthly surcharge on customers' water bills -- $1.50 for
residential, $2 for commercial, and $2.50 for industrial users -- to finance
source water protection programs. Proper management of our water supply will
help insure the prosperity of Bryan's economy and the health of its residents.
We are extremely dependent on our ground water supply; and therefore, we
must protect it from contamination. To do this, we have prepared a Source Water
Protection Plan. Preparation of this plan included determining where
the ground water that supplies our city comes from, identifying activities
that have a potential to pollute the ground water, and developing a
management strategy to protect the area from contamination. Part of the
plan included installation of signs around the area to alert motorists they
are entering a ground water protection area and to please report spills by
calling 911.
In the ongoing effort to protect our precious water resources, the
Water Department expanded the Ohio EPA mandated Wellhead Protection Plan.
We have broken this undertaking into 3 types of evaluations:
- Evaluation and protection of current wellfields and the development of
an additional wellfield for future growth of Bryan
- Review of potentially contaminating land uses in the county
- Identification and protection of the MICHINDOH Glacial Aquifer and
achieving its designation as a Sole Source Aquifer
