Drinking water week highlights importance of tap water

By LOU PENDLETON

Along with other water utilities across America, Bryan Municipal Utilities is celebrating National Drinking Water Week, May 4 to 10, as an opportunity to highlight the importance of safe, reliable tap water and the system that delivers it.

“Tap water is such an integral part of our lives that we sometimes don’t notice its immeasurable value,” said Norman Echler, Bryan Water Department superintendent. “A safe, reliable water supply creates jobs, attracts industry and investment, and provides for public health and fire protection.”

“Drinking Water Week is a natural opportunity for all of us to pause and consider the value of critical water infrastructure and the ongoing need to repair and replace aging pipes. Much of our drinking water infrastructure was constructed between 50 and 100 years ago. As a result, we have nearly 30 miles of underground water lines that are reaching the end of their lifespan and are in need of replacement. The good news is that due to efforts the past 30 years, we have nearly 40 miles of newer pipe that should last another 70 years or more.”

“While it is costly to repair and replace the aging pipes, the cost of inaction could be immeasurable,” said Echler. “The water department tracks the condition of the underground system and develops plans to replace portions of pipe each year. Our goal is to replace about 3,000 feet of pipe annually.”

“We are all stewards of the magnificent drinking water system built largely by past generations and passed on to us. It is now our responsibility to ensure a safe and reliable water supply for future generations to enjoy.”

Bryan Municipal Utilities joins with the American Water Works Association and many utilities across the country to celebrate drinking water week. Established in 1881, American Water Works Association, an organization of water professionals, is the oldest and largest nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to safe water in North America.
