Generation

In 1897, Bryan's new steam-powered generators were started for the first time. Two 60-light Wood machines provided direct current for 63 arc street lights and 20 arc lamps used for inside lighting. By 1906, the utility abandoned steam power and installed two 225-hp American diesel engines powering 150-kilowatt generators. After a series of larger diesel engine generators, Bryan installed its first combustion turbine generator in 1962. The engine of the 5,500-kilowatt General Electric combustion turbine was basically a stationary jet engine capable of burning either natural gas or diesel fuel.

Generators

Today, Bryan Municipal Utilities has almost 40 megawatts of nameplate capacity from four generators:

• Two Westinghouse gas/diesel turbines rated at 15,730 kW each
• A dual shaft GE gas/diesel turbine rated at 5,700 kW
• A 3600 horsepower, 9-cylinder, Nordberg diesel rated at 2,500 kW

In addition, our Power Plant maintains six 1,825 kW diesel generators owned by AMP-Ohio that can be drawn on during heavy load periods.

Also tied to the network is the Auglaize Hydroelectric Plant. The Auglaize plant has six generators: five Westinghouse and one General Electric.

Emergencies and Repairs

The Power Plant serves as an after hours clearinghouse for emergency calls for city electric, cable television, water and traffic signal problems. To report a problem after 5 p.m. and on weekends, please call 419-633-6150.
