Bryan Municipal Utilities – Email Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Why are you getting rid of @cityofbryan.net email accounts?
A:  We are eliminating all @cityofbryan.net email accounts because the software we use to support these accounts is being discontinued.  This means that we’ll no longer be able to install the latest security updates or reach out to support.

Q:  When is the last day that I’ll be able to access my @cityofbryan.net email account?
A:  The last day you can login and access your email is 7/31/2024.  In order not to lose any data, please backup your email and contacts prior to this date.  Also, be sure to migrate any websites that use your @cityofbryan.net email account to a new address since you won’t be able to login to your @cityofbryan.net email account after 7/31/2024.

Q:  Will BMU be sending a tech out to help customers setup a new account(s) and then add the new account(s) to customer devices?  Can we call BMU Helpdesk for assistance?
A:  No, BMU nor BMU Helpdesk will be able to assist you with creating a new email account(s) and setting up your device(s).  Instructions on how to set up a new account and how to add these accounts to third-party email clients, such as Outlook and Thunderbird, can be found on this page.

Q:  How do I save the email from my email client, such as Outlook and Thunderbird?
A:  For Outlook, you can export all of your email to a .PST file by following these instructions.  For Thunderbird, you can export your entire Thunderbird profile by following these instructions.

Q:  How do I export my email contacts from my email client, such as Outlook and Thunderbird?
A:  For Outlook, you can export all of your email contacts by following these instructions.  For Thunderbird, you can export your entire Thunderbird profile, which includes contacts by following these instructions.  If you need to export your contacts from Thunderbird to a .csv file, we recommend doing a quick Google search on this topic.

Q:  What email providers do you recommend for a new email account(s)?
A:  This is not a full list of email providers, but we would recommend Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, or AOL.

Q:  If I sign up for another service, how do I configure my email client to receive email?
A:  For the above mentioned email providers, you can use a modern browser like Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari to access your email.  However, if you prefer to use a third-party email client like Outlook or Thunderbird, information on how to set up these clients can be found on Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, and AOL.

Q:  I am a business, what service do you recommend?
A:  If you are a business and want a custom email address and domain (ie, username@mybusiness.com), we recommend setting up a Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 account.  NOTE:  These services are not free and will require you to pay a monthly fee.  Google Workspace pricing/features are here and Microsoft 365 pricing/features are here.  If you do not wish to have a custom email address and domain, you can create a free email account from the providers mentioned above.
