At 11:11 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, service to all Bryan Municipal Utilities (BMU) electric customers was interrupted.

Crews were immediately dispatched to investigate the cause of the service interruption. It was determined that last night’s adverse weather caused a windborne tree limb to come in contact with a lightning arrestor, causing a short circuit that opened multiple substation breakers.

Crews isolated the problem, cleared the limb and attempted to restore service at approximately 1 a.m. on June 1. However, a substation relay failed to operate properly, delaying restoration of service until circuits were manually rerouted around the protective device.

Electric service was restored to customers in the south and east portions of Bryan at approximately 2:24 a.m.

Service was restored to remaining electric customers by approximately 3:40 a.m. If you remain without electric service, please contact BMU at 419.633.6100

“This electric service interruption was more extensive in both duration and number of customers than we typically experience,” said BMU Director of Utilities Kevin Maynard. “Our crews worked as expeditiously as possible to safely restore electric service to all affected customers. We apologize for any inconvenience created by the service interruption.”
