Bryan Municipal Water Department has begun its yearly spring water main flushing program.

John Caperton(Pictured), water distribution supervisor, said the water crew will flush the main large trunk lines from the water treatment plant to the water towers first. Then, they will flush the smaller distribution lines starting on and near Center Street and west of Main Street.

To flush the lines, crews will flow the hydrants for about 10 minutes or until the water is running clear. While at the hydrant, the crew will inspect the hydrants for leaks and functionality, making note so they can return to fix any found issues.

Some water customers may experience rusty or discolored water during this time. In most cases, the condition is temporary, and water quality will return to normal as flushing in that section of the city is completed. BMU recommends residents flush their service lines by running water in the bathtub.

Although the discolored water is not harmful to drink, it may stain white and light colored clothes washed in it. For this reason, it is recommended that clothes not be washed during regular working hours while the flushing program is being conducted.
